Foreign nationals who have close relatives legally residing in Serbia can obtain a temporary residence permit (residence card) on the basis of family reunification. This type of permit allows family members to live together in the country in accordance with the Law on Foreigners.

A temporary residence permit based on family reunification can be granted to close relatives of Serbian citizens or foreign nationals who already hold a valid temporary or permanent residence permit in Serbia. Family members who are already in Serbia may have their own grounds for temporary residence, such as employment, business ownership, or property purchase.

Generally, eligibility for this type of permit includes spouses, minor or adopted children, and in certain justified cases, parents or other dependents supported by a sponsor residing in Serbia.

To apply, a set of documents confirming family relationships and the right to legally stay in Serbia is required. This typically includes a valid passport, documents proving family relationships (such as a marriage or birth certificate), and health insurance valid in Serbia. Additional documents may be requested to confirm accommodation and financial means. All foreign documents must be translated into Serbian by a certified court translator and, if necessary, legalized or apostilled.

Application Procedure, Duration, and Renewal

Applications for temporary residence are submitted in person at the Department for Foreigners of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the city or municipality where the applicant plans to reside. In some cases, online submission may be possible.

A temporary residence permit on the basis of family reunification is usually issued for up to three years and can be renewed if the grounds for residence remain valid. After three consecutive years of residence, the permit holder may be eligible to apply for permanent residence, and eventually, Serbian citizenship.

Holders of a temporary residence permit can legally live in Serbia, move freely throughout the country, and, depending on the specific case, work or study. They also have access to healthcare, education, and other public services available to foreign residents.
