Visa Runs in Serbia and Russia: Myths About Legal Stay Extensions

In some countries, foreigners used to rely on the so-called “visa run” — leaving and then re-entering a country to reset their permitted length of stay. Many believe this method allows them to remain in a country for long periods without proper documentation. In reality, this approach does not work in Serbia.

In Serbia, citizens of other countries can stay visa-free for a limited time, but it is impossible to live there for years by repeatedly exiting and re-entering every few weeks or months. To stay legally, you must obtain the appropriate legal status.

A similar situation exists in Russia. In the past, visa-free foreigners could enter for 90 days, register their stay, and then simply leave and return to receive new migration cards. Today, this method is prohibited due to the “90 out of 180” rule. This means that a visa-free foreign citizen may stay in Russia for no more than 90 days within any 180-day period, and these days do not have to be consecutive. Both the day of entry and the day of exit are counted.

Violating this rule leads to serious consequences:

Exceeding the permitted 90 days — entry ban for 3 years

Staying more than 180 but less than 270 days — entry ban for 5 years

Staying more than 270 days — entry ban for 10 years

Thus, even if someone online claims that visa runs work and allow you to “live for years,” this is a myth. Attempting to extend your stay through exit and re-entry does not make your stay legal and may result in long-term entry bans.

Using Russia as an example, it is clear that visa runs are not a safe way to live in a country without proper documents. The situation in Serbia is similar: long-term legal stay can only be obtained through official permits and proper legal status.
